First, you'll be guided through an exercise that will encourage you to consider what's important to you in your life and your future career. Then, you'll be given the opportunity to explore possible careers that align with those views and values. You'll also be provide with information about the core competencies necessary to be successful with any career. Finally, you'll be guided through writing your current career narrative. 

    Throughout this course, you'll write about what's important to you and who you want to be. You'll be most successful if you're honest with yourself. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to Becoming Career Ready - it's your journey!

    Building Motivation: Supporting Mentee Behavior Change with Motivational Interviewing

    This course will be available on Feb. 1, 2024

    Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual's motivation for and movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. In this course, mentors will learn the basics of MI and how to use it with their mentees.

    Constructing Your Resume and Cover Letter

    It’s critical that employers can envision candidates as successful employees. Consider your past experiences and how they may be relevant to the job--this is your career narrative. The narrative, in turn, helps you determine what to include and how to frame what you put in your cover letter and on your resume. A cover letter is the first impression that a potential employer has of you. Your resume is your story to that point detailed in a professional manner. Together, these two aid in getting you jobs and throughout this course you will find various resources to help you construct both a cover letter and a resume.

    Mentoring for Youth Mental Health – Fall 2024

    It is becoming increasingly common for youth referred to mentoring programs to be struggling with a wide variety of mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, aggression, or attention difficulties. This course covers evidence-based techniques that can be infused into mentoring practices to more effectively address these kinds of mental health concerns. Course participants will learn about cutting-edge techniques proven by research to be effective in clinical settings, and will discuss how to implement these strategies in diverse mentoring program settings. Participants will also discuss the ways that youth identity may intersect with mentoring techniques, and consider how to apply techniques in a culturally humble way with youth from diverse, marginalized backgrounds.
